[DOVER OHIO, MARCH 23, 2022] – The Tuscarawas County YMCA held it’s annual meeting and volunteer recognition dinner on Monday, March 21, 2022 at the Tuscarawas County Senior Center. The meeting was chaired by YMCA Board of Directors Chair, Brian Proctor, and CEO, Tiffany Foxx. The 2021 annual report and financials were presented.

Retiring Board of Directors members, Bridget Britton, Doug Peterman,Jr., Jim Wherley, Jr., and Randy Lucas were recognized and thanked for their service. Retiring Board of Trustees member, Steve Stocker was also recognized and thank for his service. Newly elected members to the Board of Directors were introduced: elected in 2021 were Jason Bambeck, Lisa Beamer, Chris Beck, Dave Denney, and renewing was Emily Springer.

Tiffany Foxx, CEO, thanked all the donors who had sustained the Y throughout the pandemic. Special recognition was given to the grants and gifts received in 2021. These included gifts from the Ann Marsh Estate, Brian & Pamela Marsh Charitable Fund, Doris & Floyd Kimble Foundation, Dorothy G. Foland Rev. Trust, The Rosenberry Foundation, Tuscarawas County Commissioners, The Reeves Foundation, Tuscarawas County Community Foundation, John & Orlena Marsh Foundation, and Atwood Lake Boats/Bill & Kristin Fenech Family Foundation. Tiffany also gave special thanks to the donors, staff, coaches and parents who helped raise funds in 2021 to overhaul the equipment in the Patton Gymnastics Center.

Board of Trustees Chair, Nathan Vaughan, recognized current Heritage Club members. Nathan stated, “Since 1968 the Heritage Club has helped sustain the Y through economic turmoil and kept Y fees low and affordable for Tuscarawas County”. Heritage Club members are donors who have made an outright gift or a commitment of planned giving to our endowment fund. Tiffany Foxx particularly recognized those members we lost in 2021 who helped sustain the future of the Y through memorial donations. The endowment fund draws only on interest, ensuring the Tuscarawas County YMCA will continue to support our community for generations to come.

Volunteers are essential to the YMCA and it’s mission of service to the community. In 2021, 240 volunteers gave a total of 3,478 hours of their time to Y programs, special events, and community services. Without volunteers, the Y wouldn’t be able to support the community’s needs.

Four special volunteer recognition awards were given during the annual meeting:

The Baranack Family of New Philadelphia was recognized at the 2021 YMCA Family of the Year. Family members are parents, Jeffrey and Tiffany, and children Bryce, Aleeya, Elliott, Coralie, Scarlet, Bridget, Lorelei, and Rosalie. They received two separate nominations for this honor. Stacy Harlan, Aquatics Director, presented them with the award. She noted they have six children consistently in Y programs and children who are active on both the YMCA swim and gymnastics teams. Stacy praised Jeff and Tiffany for “supporting and encouraging their own children as well as other children in the programs and for modeling behavior consistent with the YMCA principles of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility”. She thanked them for teaching their children to support and uplift each other and for being a positive and goal driven influence for not only their own children, but other Y members as well.

Lillie Cox of Dover was recognized at the 2021 Volunteer of the Year. Nancy Smith, Gymnastics Coordinator, nominated her for the award and was also honored to present it to her. Nancy noted that Lillie started out by taking gymnastics lessons and progressed through gymnastics team membership to volunteering her time teaching classes and helping other members of the team. Lillie accumulated over 300 volunteer hours in 2021 in support of the YMCA’s gymnastics program. Her dedication and commitment to the program is greatly appreciated.

The 2021 Youth Leadership Award was presented to Aliyah Price of Bolivar. Jade Boffo, Childcare Director, nominated her for the award and was proud to present it to her. Jade nominated Aliyah for her assistance and volunteerism in youth programs such as after school, summer camp, Leader’s Club, and many special events throughout the year. Jade thanked Aliyah for her guidance and help during her first year as summer camp director and noted her positive attitude and willingness to help whenever needed.

The 2022 Leo Poland Award was proudly presented to Nathan Vaughan of Dover. Presenting the award was trustee and long time Y supporter, Brian Marsh. Brian explained that the award was developed over 50 years ago to honor individuals who give countless hours and dedication to the Y. Nathan has been a Y member for 30 years and has been involved in many committees as a Y volunteer over the years. He served on the Board of Directors from 2006-2011, including as Chairman. Nathan has served on the Board of Trustees from 2012 to present, and is current Chair. Brian noted that Nathan does a lot of work behind the scenes and has updated many Y policies and procedures during his tenure, securing the future of the Tuscarawas County YMCA.

The Tuscarawas County YMCA is located at 600 Monroe Street in Dover. The Y has 5,778 members, 187 dedicated staff, and 240 amazing volunteers.

Tuscarawas County YMCA Ready to Provide Emergency Childcare for Essential Workers

DOVER, OH – April 7, 2020 – Throughout the Y’s history, we have been called upon in times of crisis, conflict, and strife to provide critical services. In the past few weeks, the Tuscarawas County YMCA has been contacted by emergency services about providing childcare for mission-critical staff.

“Without childcare, they cannot work; and without work, they cannot serve our community or provide for their families in this crucial time. We need our essential workers to feel supported and the Y can and will provide this piece to ease their worries” states CEO Tiffany Foxx.

The Tuscarawas County YMCA has been providing high quality, licensed child care programs for over 30 years. Though most widely known for programs like health and fitness, swimming, and sports, the Y wants to ensure the community that “we are so much more” adds Foxx.
With the support and assistance of local community partners, the Y is prepared to offer full-day emergency childcare for first responders, military, hospital personnel, grocery store workers, and other essential staff that must report to work to keep our community safe and provided for.

In the Y childcare program, children will be provided with homework help, enjoy arts, crafts, games, sports, movies, and supervision from experienced Y staff. “We will take extraordinary precautions in the provision of this service. Our emergency childcare facility has been thoroughly cleaned using a hospital-grade disinfectant and staff have been properly trained on all the safety guidelines” says Jade Boffo, YMCA Child Care Director.

Upon arrival, staff and children will receive a health screen, wash and sanitize hands, and remain in small groups of six while also practicing social distancing. Throughout the day, staff and volunteers will monitor children and staff, looking for symptoms of COVID-19. Those who display symptoms will be sent home immediately.

Parents should send their children with lunch, snacks, and a water bottle with their name clearly displayed. YMCA Emergency Childcare will operate at the Tuscarawas County YMCA location, 600 Monroe Street, Dover, from 6:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M., Monday-Friday.
This program is for children age 3 (potty-trained) through age 12. Registration paperwork must be completed 24 hours in advance of start date. For more registration information, forms, or questions, please contact Tuscarawas County YMCA Child Care Director Jade Boffo at jade@tuscymca.org or by calling 330-364-5511 ext 309.

Through collaborations and community support, we can overcome and will – once again – prove we are Tuscarawas County Ohio Strong.

Tuscarawas County YMCA Celebrates 100 Years

https://www.timesreporter.com/news/20191226/tuscarawas-county-ymca-marks-100th-anniversary-on-sunday?fbclid=IwAR0HofY1Pl6sUtCrvZTrGrow4kNTYljugMlgjQwxvt4VVrW6MEXa7fqDUKs

The Tuscarawas County YMCA is celebrating their 100 year history. The YMCA began on Dec 29, 1919 with a small group of forward-looking men who came together with area churches to assist with religious education. Its first meeting location was above the Bruck's Hardware store on West Third Street in downtown Dover. During the following years its members met in four different locations in Dover.

In the mid-1920s, members came to realize that to attract more members the YMCA must provide facilities to attract young people, emphasizing the physical as well as spiritual aspects. In 1927 Andrew Deis gave the YMCA the gift of land on Factory Street (now Tuscarawas Avenue) and $75,000, with the plan that the community would raise an additional $50,000. Total cost of a new YMCA building was $135,000 and was it dedicated December 1928. (Picture attached one of building front and one of ground breaking.)

The YMCA was far ahead of its time offering swim instruction and basketball to men, women, boys, and girls. These programs remain strong today along with numerous other activities.

The Tuscarawas County YMCA closed several times in the 1930s and 1940s suffering severe financial problems until the early 1960s. Miles Durr of Utica, New York was hired as the Executive Director in 1944, holding that position until June 30, 1966. Under the leadership of this one-man staff, new programs were initiated, some with corporate sponsorship, all producing strong growth.

In 1945 Miles Durr mentored a young man who was a part-time custodian at the YMCA and worked midnights at Shenango Penn Mold in Dover. In three months, he convinced that young man to attend college to study Physical Education, with the plan to return to the Tuscarawas County YMCA as its Physical Director. That young man was Tom Patton, who served as Physical Director from 1949-1966 and Executive Director 1966-1989.

Together Durr and Patton brought imagination and enthusiasm to the YMCA membership with an emphasis and tradition on mentoring youth. This commitment to our youth has remained strong through the years, mentoring countless youth in youth sports, Youth Leaders Club, and swim, gymnastics, and judo teams. The YMCA experience has shaped many lives.

The YMCA programs thrived in the 1960s, and they outgrew the “old YMCA” on Tuscarawas Avenue. A capital campaign under the leadership of John Marsh Sr. was launched raising $1,325.141 for a new YMCA location on a 10-acre site between Dover and New Philadelphia. Groundbreaking for a new building took place in May 1970 and they moved into the new facility September 1, 1971.

In the 1990’s under the leadership of Executive Director Keith Lands (1994-2017), the Tuscarawas County YMCA continued to expand its facilities and programs.

Over the years, the YMCA has been transformed with several additions and renovations to better serve its members. Today the YMCA boasts programs for all ages, with swim classes starting at 6 months of age, licensed preschool, youth sports of all kinds, instruction in fitness and aquatics for all ages, competitive team sports, and SilverSneakers.

Each year, the YMCA provides financial assistance to area youth, adult, and families through the YMCA Annual Campaign. “This commitment to serving everyone in our community regardless of their ability to pay has been a YMCA mission throughout our history,” states CEO, Tiffany Foxx.

An Open House Celebration has been planned for Sunday, December 29 (the official 100 Year Anniversary) from 1-4 PM at the Tuscarawas County YMCA located at 600 Monroe Street, Dover, Ohio. “This event is free to the community and will be fun for the entire family,” says Foxx. Activities for the day will include guided tours, swimming, inflatables, and refreshments. On display is a timeline of the YMCA history that tells their story in pictures.

Waterproofing Kids May Be Impossible, but Tuscarawas County YMCA Can Help Make Them Safer Around Water

As the summer swim season arrives, the YMCA encourages children and parents in Tuscarawas County to explore the many benefits of swimming, while also keeping safety top of mind. In Y swim programs, participants can enjoy water sports, enhance or learn new techniques, meet new friends and develop confidence, while also learning safety skills that can save lives.
The Y encourages parents to take an active role in fostering a relationship between their children and swimming—beginning with water safety. The following are safety tips to practice when in and around the water:

  • Only swim when and where there is a lifeguard on duty; never swim alone.
  • Adults should constantly and actively watch their children.
  • Inexperienced or non-swimmers should wear a Coast Guard-approved life jacket.
  • Parents or guardians of young children should be within an arm’s reach.
  • Children and adults should not engage in breath holding activities.

In addition to learning lifesaving water safety skills, swimming is a great way to increase physical activity. Swimming also motivates children to strive for self-improvement, teaches goal orientation and cultivates a positive mental attitude and high self-esteem. It also teaches life lessons of sport and sportsmanship, so that children can learn how to work well with teammates and coaches and how to deal with winning and losing.
As a leading nonprofit committed to youth development, the Y continues to help youth and adults experience the joy and benefits of swimming, so they can be healthy, confident and secure in the water. There are a variety of programs to choose, including the Safety Around Water Program. June 10-15 the Y will be offering this week long program for children grades 1-5. This program is Free but does require registration.
The Safety Around Water program is an educational program that teaches a variety of water safety and swim skills that are vital towards a safe swimming experience. Skills taught in the water will include, but are not limited to, breath control with submersion, front and back floats, treading water, and jumping in and returning towards the wall.

The class will be divided into groups based on the swimmers’ swim skills at the start of the class and each group is taught according to their current swimming ability. More advanced swimmers may learn additional swimming skills not mentioned. Additional information for parents and guardians will be available as well. To register for this program please stop by the YMCA at 600 Monroe Street, Dover Ohio or register online at www.tuscymca.org

To learn more about the Tuscarawas County YMCA’s swim programs, please contact the Member Service Center at 330-364-5511. The summer session for all programs will be June 10, including aquatics, gymnastics, summer camp and more. A complete program guide can be found at www.tuscymca.org

“As we head into the summer, the Y wants to help awaken their imaginations and help them achieve amazing things. There are no days off for a child’s developing mind and body,” said Fitness Director Kathleen Johnson “and Healthy Kids Day is a great opportunity to educate families and engage kids to stay physically and intellectually active over the summer.”

In celebration of YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day, the Y offers the following tips to help families develop healthy habits:

  • High Five the Fruits and Veggies – Make sure kids get at least five servings a day, the minimum number nutritionists recommend to maintain healthy childhood development. And to keep kids’ taste buds evolving, have everyone in the family try at least one bite of a new fruit or vegetable at least once a month.
  • Read Together – The summer is a great time to enjoy books with summer program participants—and 30 minutes a day goes a long way! Take trips to the local library or create a family reading challenge to see who can log the most minutes of reading. Encourage youth to create their own stories as well.
  • Get Moving! – Activities that require movement also help kids flex their mental muscle. Use materials in unique ways: ask youth to build models, manipulate tools or develop their own theatrical scenes.
  • Play Together – Play may be the best way to prevent childhood obesity. By putting more play into your family’s day, you will soon find yourself getting the activity that will have your family feeling energized and strong.
  • Make sleep a priority – Doctors recommend 10-12 hours of sleep a day for children ages 5-12 and 7-8 hours per night for adults. Sleep plays a critical role in maintaining our healthy immune system, metabolism, mood, memory, learning and other vital functions.

The Y encourages youth and families to awaken summer imagination and this cannot be done without proper nutrition. Walmart Foundation and Delta is proud to sponsor Healthy Kids Day to raise awareness about the importance of food security and nutrition for youth and families.

Locally, Healthy Kids Day event is sponsored by Dover Brake of Strasburg. Inflatable Sponsors: Dover/Phila Credit Union and McDonald’s. Community Partners: United Way of Tuscarawas County and Dennison Rotary. With door prizes donated by Parkway Auto, the Y, and Safe Kids Coalition Twin City.

Don’t Let a Fear of Falls Hold You Back

Each year on the first day of fall, national organizations from the Falls Free Coalition and the National Council on Aging (NCOA) join together for National Falls Prevention Awareness Day, a day of action to help raise awareness and prevention of falls. On Friday, September 22, the Tuscarawas County YMCA is asking older adults, caregivers, family members and health care professionals in Tuscarawas County to unite to raise awareness to prevent falls among older adults.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an older adult in the U.S. is treated in the ER for a fall-related injury every 14 seconds and dies from a fall-related injury every 29 minutes. Additionally, falls put an immense strain on the health care system, with the financial toll expected to reach $67.7 billion by 2020. The good news is falls are preventable, and the first step to prevention is understanding risk. With a focus on healthy aging, the Y is committed to helping older adults learn their fall risk and access programs that can help them reduce their risk for falls.

“Falling and fear of falling may prevent older adults from staying active, which leads to reduced mobility, diminished quality of life and actually increases their risk of falling,” said Tiffany Foxx, CEO of the Tuscarawas County YMCA. “The good news is that falls are highly preventable and help is available for older adults and their families who want to get active but don’t know how.”

As a leading community-based organization dedicated to improving the nation’s health for all families, the Tuscarawas County YMCA encourages older adults to learn their risk for falls by taking a fall risk test at http://www.ymca.net/health-wb-fitness/ .

Once risk is assessed, the Tuscarawas County YMCA is helping older adults feel strong, steady and safe by reducing fall risk through programs like Chair Yoga, SilverSneakers® Yoga, SilverSneakers® Classic Class, strength training classes and Enhance®Fitness programs.

The CDC suggests these basic lifestyle and safety changes to help reduce risk or prevent falls:

  • Begin an exercise program to improve your leg strength & balance.
  • Ask your doctor or pharmacist to review your medicines.
  • Get annual eye check-ups & update your eyeglasses.
  • Make your home safer by:
    • Removing clutter & tripping hazards.
    • Putting railings on all stairs & adding grab bars in the bathroom.
    • Installing proper lighting, especially on stairs.

May is Older Americans Month

The Tuscarawas County YMCA encourages older adults in our community to eat healthy, get active and social

[Dover, Tuesday, May 09, 2017] – May is Older Americans Month and the Tuscarawas County YMCA encourages all adults 50 years and older to get motivated and develop behaviors that are crucial to healthy aging, including healthy eating, increasing physical activity and social interaction.

Adults 50 years and older currently make up more than 30 percent of the U.S. population, and will soon represent 45 percent of all Americans. Here in Tuscarawas County adults 50 and older make over 30 percent1 of the population. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggests that adults 50 and older have a 70 percent chance of developing at least one chronic disease. While these numbers seem daunting, the good news is that making small lifestyle changes that include increasing physical activity, eating healthier and staying active socially can help older adults live better.

“The image of an older adult sitting on the porch in a rocking chair is long gone—today’s older adult is more active, engaged and in control of their health,” said Steph Wills, Senior Program Director, Tuscarawas County YMCA. Community-based organizations like the Y provide the needed guidance to help them reach health goals, particularly when it comes to chronic disease prevention.”

The Y offers many ways for older adults to live healthier including fitness classes on land and in the water, Diabetes Prevention Programs, and Fitness Lectures.

The Y offers options to improve mobility and help with daily life movement. “Warm Water Twinges Programs, provided by the Y through a United Way Grant, are the staple for adults with arthritis. This class helps improve their mobility so they can continue to be active throughout the day” says Stacy Harlan, Y Aquatics Director. Willis adds, “I am so happy to help facilitate an active lifestyle by combining music and movements for our seniors through the SilverSneakers® programs. We have a blast and they get the benefits of fellowship, laughter and physical activity.”

Additionally, the Y offers the following tips on how to jump-start your healthy-living routine:

  1. Have fun with your food. Eating healthy doesn’t have to be boring! Have fun with your fruits and vegetables by trying them fresh or frozen. Find a new recipe that uses a different source of protein or find a way to incorporate fish or beans into an old favorite. Remember as you age, it’s important to eat a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat or fat-free dairy and lean meats to help your body get the necessary nutrients.
  2. Fill up on fiber and potassium, hold the salt. As you age, your body needs more fiber rich foods to help it stay regular. Aim for a variety of colorful foods on your plate (i.e. fruits and veggies) to keep fiber rich foods a part of your diet. Additionally, increasing potassium along with reducing sodium or salt may lower your risk of high blood pressure. Fruits, vegetables and low-fat or fat-free milk and yogurt are good sources of potassium.
  3. Get Active. Physical activity is safe for almost everyone, and the health benefits of physical activity far outweigh the risks. Regular physical activity is one of the most important things older adults can do for their health. It can prevent many of the health problems that seem to come with age (such as osteoporosis and arthritis) and reduce the risk for developing, or help manage, depression, diabetes, heart disease, stroke and certain kinds of cancers. For older adults who have chronic conditions that hinder their ability to be active on a regular basis, some physical activity is better than none, and older adults who participant in any amount of physical activity gain some health benefits.
  4. Tweak your routine. To get the recommended 30 minutes of daily physical activity, change your routine to 10-minute sessions throughout the day. For example, stand on one foot while brushing your teeth to increase balance, and do squats while washing dishes to increase strength. Make sure you can grab hold of something to maintain balance—safety first! To increase your cardio, take the stairs instead of the elevator or park farther from the entrance to work. When sitting in front of the TV, march during commercials or do some light stretching to break up sitting for long periods.
  5. Get social. Socialization is an important part of aging. As we get older, it’s important to be active socially to stay healthy. Take a walk with a friend or a neighbor, join a book club or volunteer at your local pet shelter or local Y. Social interaction provides meaningful engagement, builds relationships, enhances a sense of belonging and provides opportunities for involvement—all resulting in greater bonds and a stronger sense of community. Being connected to the community keeps you healthy!

Free Community Event at the Y Promotes Healthy Kids

For over 25 years Healthy Kids Day has celebrated kids’ health and continues to teach healthy habits for kids and families, encourage active play and inspire a lifetime love of physical activity.
Nearly 1.2 million children and their families across the country are expected to participate in YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day at more than 1,600 locations.

Locally, the Tuscarawas County YMCA will participate in the Y’s national initiative to improve the health and well-being of kids and families. Healthy Kids Day will be held on Saturday, April 29 from noon to 3 PM and include fun active play plus educational activities to keep kids moving and learning. “Y’s across the country will be coordinating similar events focusing on health, education, and safety to ensure fewer children are at an increased risk of obesity, being injured, or fall behind academically during the summer months,” said Steph Wills, Senior Program Director at the Tuscarawas County YMCA.

“Kids face many hurdles that prevent them from reaching their full potential” added Wills. “As a leading nonprofit committed to youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, the Y is addressing critical gaps in kids’ health and education.”

Research shows that children gain weight two to three times faster during the summer vacation than during the school year. They are less physically active and engaged in learning during the summer months.

This year the local McDonalds will be sponsoring the event at Tuscarawas County YMCA and providing their Care Mobile Dental Unit, with free dental checkups and tooth brushes and Ronald McDonald will lead his “GO ACTIVE” live show at 1:00 pm.

You Can’t Afford to Ignore Prediabetes

Tuesday, March 28, is American Diabetes Association (ADA) Alert Day®, and the Tuscarawas County YMCA wants residents of Tuscarawas County to know their risk for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes, as well as preventive steps they can take today to reduce the chances of developing the disease.

In the United States alone, diabetes affects nearly 29 million people; another 86 million Americans have prediabetes, yet only about 10 percent are aware of it. These statistics are alarming, and the impact on the cost of health care (in 2012 alone, the ADA estimates that diabetes cost the health care system $245 billion) makes preventing the number of new cases of type 2 diabetes more important than ever before.

The nation’s struggle with obesity and type 2 diabetes is no surprise but the number of people with prediabetes is a growing issue, especially when so few people realize they have the condition. Prediabetes is a condition in which individuals have blood glucose levels that are higher than normal, but not high enough to be classified as diabetes. Often preventable, people with prediabetes can reduce their risk for developing type 2 diabetes by adopting behavior changes that include eating healthier and increasing physical activity. People with prediabetes are at risk for not only developing type 2 diabetes, but also cardiovascular disease, stroke and other conditions.

As the leading community-based network committed to improving the nation’s health the Tuscarawas County YMCA encourages all adults to take a diabetes risk test at www.ymca.net/diabetes. Several factors that could put a person at risk for type 2 diabetes include family history, age, weight and activity level, among others.

“Studies show that people with prediabetes can prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes by making simple lifestyle changes that include eating healthier and increasing physical activity,” said Brandi Hibbs, Healthy Living Director, Tuscarawas Count YMCA. “Steps taken now to prevent developing diabetes not only makes good health sense; it makes good economic sense.”

The Tuscarawas County Y is helping people make healthier choices that can help reduce the risk of developing prediabetes or type 2 diabetes by a United Way funded Diabetes prevention program. Our next class will begin April 5 at 9:30 AM and is free and open to the community. Please contact the Y for more info or email Brandi @ brandi@tuscymca.org.

Some basic lifestyle changes that contribute to weight loss and an increased focus on healthy living can decrease the risk for type 2 diabetes. Among these are:

  • Reduce portion sizes of the foods you eat that may be high in fat or calories.

Tuscarawas County YMCA offers Diabetes Prevention Program, a United Way Funded program.

As a leading nonprofit for strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, the Y believes that all people should be able to live life to its fullest, healthiest potential. In the YMCA's Diabetes Prevention Program, a trained lifestyle coach will introduce topics in a supportive, small group environment, and encourage participants as they explore how healthy eating, physical activity, and behavior changes can benefit their health.
How it Works:

  • The 12-month group-based program consists of 7 one-hour, weekly sessions, followed by monthly sessions, led by a coach who facilitates a small group of people with similar goals.
  • Discuss topics such as healthy eating, increasing physical activity, reducing stress, problem solving, and much more.
  • Stay motivated to maintain progress towards program goals, with monthly maintenance sessions.

Program Goals:

  • Lose 7% of your body weight
  • Gradually increase your physical activity to 150 minutes per week.

You will do this by learning strategies for:
Healthy Eating - Eating smaller portions, reducing fat in your diet, and discovering healthier food options have been proven to help prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes1.
Increasing Physical Activity—Studies have repeatedly shown that moderate physical activity (walking, swimming, mowing the lawn) for as little as 30 minutes, five days a week, can help improve your blood pressure, raise your good cholesterol, and prevent blood flow problems2.
Losing Weight - It has been shown that reducing your body weight by even a small amount (as little as 7%) can offer tremendous benefits for people at risk for diabetes3.
Based on research funded by the National Institutes of Health, the program has been shown to reduce the number of new cases of type 2 diabetes by as much as 58%. The reduction was even greater, 71%, among adults aged 60 years or older.
This is a United Way funded program and we strive to make it affordable to everyone. If you are not a Y member the cost is minimal and includes access to the Y and a personal trainer.
Classes begin Thursday, February 9 at 5:30 PM or Saturday, February 11 at 10:00. If you have questions please contact Brandi Hibbs at brandi@tuscymca.org.

Make Resolutions Stick in 2017

Along with singing “Auld Lang Syne” at the start of the New Year, making resolutions is a tradition for millions of Americans. However, while choosing a resolution is easy, sticking to it can be impossible. A 2014 YMCA survey found that less than a quarter of respondents kept their resolutions. Many (71 percent) tried, but stated that they fell short of their goals, while 40 percent confessed that gave up within the first few months, even weeks, of the New Year!
This year, the Tuscarawas County YMCA is encouraging community members to give their New Year’s resolutions a boost by creating smaller, more manageable goals that can lead to success of a larger one. “’Getting healthy’ is not a goal—it’s too broad,” explains Brandi Hibbs, Healthy Living Director. “You can re-frame that broad resolution into multiple, more manageable and measurable goals. If you aren’t active at all right now, try to incorporate activity into your routine three days a week, before telling yourself that you’ll work out every single day.”
The Tuscarawas County YMCA also explains that reframing your goals in a positive way can help you stick to them. For example, you may want to limit your screen time in 2017, but that can be more manageable if you replace it with something positive like volunteering or setting special time aside for family. “Try not to think about what you’re missing, but rather what you’re gaining. This can make a resolution feel more positive, and therefore more achievable,” says Hibbs.
The Tuscarawas County YMCA also explains that it’s important to not let yourself get discouraged by setbacks. Even though you may experience some missteps throughout the day—or even the week—that doesn’t mean you have to give up. “Nobody got their bad habits over the course of a week, so you’re not going to change them in a week either!” explains Brandi Hibbs. Change is a process and bad days are part of that process. Progress not perfection.
Below are four tips the Tuscarawas County YMCA recommends to help 2017 New Year’s resolutions stick.

  1. Start small. Break those big resolutions into small, achievable goals. Instead of cutting chocolate out of your diet for good, vow to only have it a few times a week. Or trade your two sodas a day for one soda and a glass of water.
  2. Take it one step at a time. Trying to change too many habits at once can easily lead to frustration. Instead of a New Year’s resolution, make a new month resolution. Focus on that one change for the month, and add another (small) change when the new month rolls around.
  3. Choose a facility that focuses on a holistic approach to health. When it comes to adding healthy behaviors, like increasing physical activity, it’s important to find a facility that keeps you motivated. Before committing to a membership, take a tour of local gyms to find the best fit for you. Your facility should not be just a gym, but a community organization that offers more health, more hope and more opportunity.
  4. Talk it out. It’s easier to stick to your resolutions if you have a partner or friend working toward similar goals. Team up with someone to set your 2015 goals and help each other establish a game plan dedicated to achieving them. Set specific check-ins to help each other out of slumps and to cheer each other during the high points.

Tuscarawas County YMCA Celebrates 97 Years of Serving Community

Dover, Ohio — In 1919, World War I had ended, Woodrow Wilson was President of the United States, dial telephones were introduced, the 18th Amendment (prohibition) went into effect, and Edsel Ford replaced his father Henry, as the CEO of the Ford Motor Company.

Here in Tuscarawas County, news was being made as well. Though it wouldn’t make national headlines the opening of Dover YMCA (now Tuscarawas County YMCA) in 1919 certainly made headlines here. The Tuscarawas County YMCA is celebrating its 97th anniversary in December 19, 2016 and is inviting the community to take part in the celebration. On Thursday December 29th, the YMCA will be waiving all joiners fees (a savings of up to $80) for new members and offering a 2 for 1 on all Personal Training sessions for new and existing members.

“In Tuscarawas County, the Y is more than a gym, it’s a place of community,” said Keith Lands Executive Director/CEO. “As the needs of the community have shifted, our mission has shifted as well. Today we work to ensure that everyone has the tools they need to reach their full potential—whether that’s through a swimming lesson, a Diabetes Prevention Program class, or our high school swim meet—we’re here for you and your family.”

When the Tuscarawas County YMCA opened in 1919, they welcomed men and boys giving them the opportunity to grow in sprit, mind, and body. Since then, women and girls have joined the Y and now make up over 52% of its membership. Today, the Y welcomes everyone, and offers financial assistance for those unable to afford to participate. Over the years, the Y has seen its membership grow significantly and has increased its programming to include a Diabetes Prevention Program which helps adults in the community reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes; a Summer Day Camp programs, afterschool child care, individual and team sports, group exercise, swimming, family programs and many more.

LANDS ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT AFTER 40 YEARS OF SERVICE TO THE Y

[Dover/Ohio, November 1, 2016] – The Tuscarawas County YMCA Chairman of the Board, William Singhaus and Nathan Vaughan, Chairman of the YMCA Board of Trustees announced jointly today the upcoming retirement of its Executive Director slated for the summer of 2017. Executive Director Keith Lands has served the Tuscarawas County YMCA since 1995 and has had an outstanding YMCA career of 40 years.

“There was not a YMCA in my home town of Circleville, Ohio when I grew up. But while in college I learned about the YMCA, it’s Christian Mission, and the work that they were doing in so many communities around the world. It was then that I decided not to pursue a career in teaching but rather seek work with in the YMCA.” Says Lands. “I truly felt called to do it.

Lands began his career as a Youth Director at the Pickaway County YMCA of Central Ohio in 1977 overseeing Gra-Y, Indian Guides, Youth Sports and the Aquatics Department. He continued to serve at many other Y’s including the Ransburg Branch of the Indianapolis YMCA, the Monroe, Michigan YMCA, and the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit. This experience led him to the Tuscarawas County YMCA where he would spend the next 22 years growing the Y.

Since April 1, 1995 Lands has been instrumental development of programs, growing membership substantially and management of a budget that now exceeds two million dollars. Five capital campaigns and 3 major building renovation and expansions occurred during his tenure, including the Patton Center Gym in 1995, Phase III Campaign in 1999 which made possible the expansion of the YMCA Wellness Center, indoor track and Hanhart Chapel, and the Renew the “Y” Campaign and project in 2007 which added a new multipurpose room, youth room, and new entrances, and remodeled much of the original building at a cost of $3,000,000.

Lands has served on a number of Y-USA committees and was recognized as the YMCA CEO of the Year in 2007 by the Association of YMCA Professionals. The Tuscarawas County YMCA currently has over 125 employees and more than 300 program and policy making volunteers providing membership services, programs, and activities for youth, families, adults and seniors in the areas of Youth Development, Healthy Living, and Social Responsibility.

“The YMCA has been more than a job to me, it has been my life. I met my wife Becky through the Y and both of my children have played, competed on sports and swim teams, and worked for the Y. My family literally “grew up” in the hallways of the Y. And now my grandchildren are benefiting from participating in YMCA programs” says Lands. “I will always feel it was my calling to work for the YMCA where everyone can help make a difference every day in the lives of young people and families.” Lands connection to the Tuscarawas County community reached more than Y members. He has served as part of the Dover Rotary for over 21 years, serving as President and Assistant District Governor. He served on the Tuscarawas County Chamber of Commerce Board and their Membership and Ambassador’s Committees. He was an active member of the Tuscarawas Football Officials Association as a high school football official for 26 years both in Ohio and Michigan, as board president, and the instructor for new officials. He was inducted into the Tuscarawas Football Officials Hall of Fame this year.

A transition committee has been formed by the Board of Directors of the Tuscarawas County YMCA to seek a replacement for Lands. The committee is led by Committee Chairman Nathan Vaughan, with Becky Mastin, Bob Gerber, Jim Boose and Jay Deeds serving as committee members. The committee is being assisted by Kathy Finney, South Central Ohio Resource Director YMCA of the USA and Francine Gill, Senior Director CEO Search Department YMCA of the USA. “After two decades of service, filling Mr. Lands’ shoes will be a tall order, however our committee is committed to finding the best candidate to serve the Tuscarawas County YMCA and its members for many years to come. We are also in great hands with the YMCA of the USA transition team.” said Vaughan.

The Y’s Zoe for President Campaign Aims to Get Parents to the Polls

The Y Organizes Nationwide Child Care Initiative, Zoe for President: Election Day Play Date, on Election Day to Support Busy Parents
Dover, Ohio— Today the Tuscarawas County YMCA announced Zoe for President: Kids Day Out; an initiative to host child care services on Election Day, providing busy parents and guardians the opportunity to make it easier to get to the polls on November 8. Acknowledging the challenges for many to balance personal life with civic duty, the Y wants to e make sure all Americans are able to exercise their right to vote.

The Tuscarawas County YMCA’s Election Day Play Date is November 8 from 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM and from 5:00 PM to 7:30 PM. This free event is for children 6 weeks to 12 years old. Parents are asked to stop at the Member Service Center to register their children.

Zoe for President: Kids Day Out is a component of Zoe for President, the Y’s effort to elect a one-year-old girl as our nation’s Commander in Chief…in 2064. It highlights the potential the Y sees in all kids to grow up and change the world if they’re nurtured properly and supported along the way. Through Y initiatives like childcare, academic enrichment, mentorship, college prep, job training, and more, kids have the opportunities to succeed, grow, and one day, maybe even become president. The Y aims to impart the values of what it means to achieve—how hard work, determination, perseverance and character can drive someone to success beyond what they thought possible.

“Our hope is that Zoe for President: Kids Day Out helps parents and care givers make sure their voices are heard, and the very children we care for are given every opportunity to reach their future potential, said Etta Hilfinger, Childcare Director. “As the largest provider of child care in the country, the Y sees the potential in all kids and understands if given the opportunity to succeed, children can grow up to be anything they want—including president.”

This initiative marks the second phase of the Y’s For a better us™ campaign, a multi-year, multi-faceted effort to engage more people with the Y and its mission as a nonprofit. Earlier this year, the Y launched two powerful television commercials, Places, and Idle Hands, each spotlighting a different problem that communities in America face today. Both spots showcased the Y’s nonprofit work on the ground, engaging and enriching kids and families through safe spaces, mentorship, education, meal programs and more.

Tuscarawas County YMCA is located at 600 Monroe Street, Dover. For more information about the “Zoe for President” campaign or for other YMCA initiatives please visit www.tuscymca.org.

Election Day Play Date at the Y

With the election just around the corner, many communities are preparing for what could be record turnout at the polls. While voting may seem easy for some people, many don’t realize it’s a struggle for others—especially parents and caregivers of small children—to get to the polls. To encourage all potential voters to visit their polling locations this November 8, the Tuscarawas County YMCA is announcing a Zoe for President: Kids Day Out initiative as part of “Zoe for President” campaign.

On November 8, Tuscarawas County YMCA will offer an Election Day Play Date for any individual that needs support to get to their polling site and vote. As the largest provider of child care in the U.S., the Y understands the need to provide the best possible services to growing, learning children and their families.

“Zoe for President” is a mock presidential campaign to elect a one-year-old girl as President of the United States…in 2064. The goal is to help people realize the potential in all of us from the very start, and the Y’s ability to help us nurture and realize our potential throughout life—Zoe for President: Kids Day Out is a direct extension of that concept. The campaign aims to educate consumers on the Y’s ability to take care of individuals and communities from birth through retirement, like no other organization in America.

Election Day Play Date is November 8 from 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM and from 5:00 PM to 7:30 PM. This free event is for children 6 weeks to 12 years old. Parents are asked to stop at the Member Service Center to register their children.

November is National Diabetes Awareness Month: Are You One of the 86 Million Americans with Prediabetes?

As the prediabetes rate continues to rise, few Tuscarawas County residents know they are at risk

Dover, November 1, 2016 – During National Diabetes Awareness Month, the Tuscarawas County YMCA is encouraging residents of Tuscarawas County to learn their risks for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes and to take preventive steps to potentially reduce their chances of developing the disease.

Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show that more than one in three Americans (86 million people) have prediabetes, up from 79 million in 2010. Prediabetes is a condition in which a person’s blood glucose is elevated, but not high enough for a diabetes diagnosis. Only 10 percent of those with prediabetes know they have it but with awareness and simple actions, people with prediabetes may prevent the onset of diabetes.

“As one of the leading community-based charities committed to building a community of integrated health across the country, the Y wants residents of Tuscarawas County to understand their risk for prediabetes and steps they can take to prevent developing Type 2 diabetes,” said Brandi Hibbs, Healthy Living Director. “Rising diabetes rates cost the nation $245 billion annually for a disease that is preventable with simple lifestyle changes like eating better and getting more physical activity.”

Individuals can assess their risk for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes by taking a simple test at YMCA.net/diabetes. Through this assessment, visitors can also learn how lifestyle choices and family history help determine the ultimate risk for developing the disease. Several factors that could put a person at risk for type 2 diabetes include race, age, weight, and activity level. If a person is at risk, a diabetes screening conducted by a physician can confirm a diabetes or prediabetes diagnosis.

Tuscarawas County YMCA is helping to improve health through Diabetes Prevention Program funded by the United Way, countless fitness classes both on land in the water, and a fully equipped Wellness Center.

Making some basic lifestyle changes that contribute to weight loss and healthy living can decrease the risk for type 2 diabetes. Among these are:

  • Eat fruits and vegetables every day.
  • Choose fish, lean meats and poultry without skin.
  • Aim for whole grains with every meal.
  • Be moderately active, getting at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week.
  • Choose water to drink instead of beverages with added sugar.
  • Speak to your doctor about your diabetes risk factors, especially if you have a family history or are overweight.

To learn more about the Tuscarawas County YMCA’s HEALTHY LIVING PROGRAMS, please contact Brandi Hibbs at 330-364-5511 or brandi@tuscymca.org. To register for the next United Way funded Diabetes Prevention Class beginning November 12, 2016, visit our website or stop by the Y to register.

Y Arts Week Success for Family Fun

Dedication to family fun took another step up during Arts Week at the Y. “It has always been my dream to encourage everyone to find their inner artists” said Kathleen Johnson, Marketing and Fitness Director at the Tuscarawas County YMCA. “So when YUSA sent out a call to the Y’s do develop a plan for Arts Week, I jumped at the opportunity to develop a few fun nights for families.”

Y Members and especially Yoga participants were encourage to bring in Art for a display in the Hanhart Chapel to enhance the artful flow of yoga throughout the month of October. Eight artists are featured in the display.

Chalk night brought out the creative energy in the Y After-School students and the multiple families who came to join the evening drawing experience. “What’s great about sidewalk chalk is that it brings out the artists in everyone, from the doodler to the fine artist, from preschooler to parent.” said Johnson.

The Y also took part in the ODOT Paint-a-Plow project. Staff and members painted for about 14 hours throughout the week to complete the project. The theme: The Y – for all seasons, featured 4 trees representing all 4 seasons and of course a snowman.

The third project for Arts Week was craft night. Three crafts were presented to inspire families to be creative and to experience painting on pallet wood and glass. Projects were designed for fall décor and were simple enough for all ages. “It was great to see families working together and seeing all the different variation that came from the same example. Plans for next year are already being prepared and the Y will be adding a creative night each month starting in November to continue the creative flow.

Twin City YMCA to Close

Keith Lands, Executive Director of the Tuscarawas County YMCA announced today that the Twin City YMCA Satellite will be closing effective Friday, July 29, 2016. This decision is a result of the Claymont City Schools announcement to close their Northside School building located on 215 North Third Street, Dennison where the Twin City YMCA has been located for the past 13 years. The Y received notice from Claymont City Schools on Monday, June 13 that the building will be closed on August 19, 2016.
“We came to the Twin City community with a plan to provide after school child care for the community,” said Keith Lands, Executive Director/CEO of the Tuscarawas County YMCA, “and to promote healthy living. We have maintained a great relationship with the Claymont Schools and understand completely their decision to close the facility in which we have been renting. We know that we have made a difference here."

A decision by the Y was made Monday, June 20, at the Tuscarawas County YMCA Executive Committee to close the Twin City YMCA satellite location. The Y has been searching for other alternative sites to relocate the YMCA that would be both affordable and provide adequate space for programs and member activities. The Y has been operating an after school program, fitness classes, gymnastics programs and wellness center. The Twin City YMCA has about 90 members and 9 part time program staff.
"This decision was difficult,” said Lands. “We have served many families in the Twin City Community and built some great relationships. Our mission, throughout the years, has been to focus on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. We know we have provided a service that was needed and our Y mission will continue to make impact from the work we have established here. We want to thank the community for their support and look forward to staying connected through outreach programs."
The Y is working to develop relationship with other organizations in the community to continue to offer programs and activities at other locations in the Twin City community. The Y Silver Sneakers program that is currently being held at the Twin City Senior Center will be moving July 12 to the Presbyterian Church in Uhrichsville. The Y is currently working with the school district for a new location for the youth afterschool program. Members of the Twin City YMCA Satellite have been notified and will be given a one year membership at the Tuscarawas County YMCA facility in Dover.

Father’s Day is More than Just an Excuse to Buy a Tie

Recognizing the important role fathers play in their children’s lives
Inspired by a Mother’s Day sermon over 100 years ago, Sonora Louis Smart Dodd wondered why there was no similar holiday for fathers. One of six children, Dodd’s father was a single father and she felt he and others deserved to be honored. After securing support from ministers in Spokane, Wash., her idea came to fruition with the first Father's Day celebration at the Spokane YMCA on June 19, 1910. Many years passed before the day became a national holiday, but today we use the day to honor the fathers and father figures in our lives.
On Sunday, June 19, the Tuscarawas County YMCA joins the nation in celebrating Father’s Day and recognizing the influence fathers and adult male role models have in children’s lives. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 24 million—or one in three—children live without their biological fathers. Societal factors such as unemployment, work-life balance or a lack of resources can affect a father’s ability to seek support in strengthening his parenting skills and becoming more engaged in the lives of his children. The Y, a leading nonprofit in fostering positive youth development, is dedicated to providing both resources and opportunities for fathers to further involve themselves in the well-being and development of their children.
Studies show that children with close relationships with their fathers and other adult male role models have more self-confidence and exhibit less depression, perform better academically and engage in significantly less drug and alcohol use.
“We celebrate dads on Father’s Day and we recognize how important it is for children to grow up with adult role models who are committed, responsible and involved,” said Keith Lands Executive Director of the Tuscarawas County YMCA. “Dads need support to be the best parents and caregivers they can be, and this holiday helps to remind us of our role to continue to give the support that all parents need.”

The Tuscarawas County YMCA offers a variety of programs that foster understanding and companionship between children and their caregivers such as Parent/Child Swim Classes, Youth Sports Programs, and Family Events. In communities across the country, the Y is committed to ensuring that the 9 million children and teens in YMCA programs reach their full potential by helping them grow—physically, mentally and socially—from young children into active, engaged members of their communities. Diabetes Prevention Program, a United Way Funded program.

As a leading nonprofit for strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, the Y believes that all people should be able to live life to its fullest, healthiest potential. In the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program, a trained lifestyle coach will introduce topics in a supportive, small group environment, and encourage participants as they explore how healthy eating, physical activity, and behavior changes can benefit their health.

  • Healthy Eating - Eating smaller portions, reducing fat in your diet, and discovering healthier food options have been proven to help prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes (Source: CDC).
  • Increasing Physical Activity - Studies have repeatedly shown that moderate physical activity (walking, swimming, mowing the lawn) for as little as 30 minutes, five days a week, can help improve your blood pressure, raise your good cholesterol, and prevent blood flow problems (Source: CDC).
  • Losing Weight - It has been shown that reducing your body weight by even a small amount (as little as 7%) can offer tremendous benefits for people at risk for diabetes (CDC).

Classes begin Saturday, January 27 at 10:00 AM. If you have questions please contact Brandi Hibbs at brandi@tuscymca.org.

YMCA Preschool and Afterschool Programs Provide Learning Enrichment Activities

[Dover,Ohio August 5, 2015] – Providing preschool children a creative environment and school-age youth with opportunities to continue to learn and engage in meaningful activities at the end of the school day can boost their academic success. To help motivate and inspire kids to learn, the Tuscarawas County YMCA is offering a Certified Preschool program and an After-School programs.. The Y’s afterschool program, for children attending Dover and New Philadelphia schools, combines academics with play and offers a caring and safe environment for youth who would otherwise be left unsupervised.

During the school year, 15.1 million U.S. children are left unsupervised after 3 p.m., according to the Afterschool Alliance, a nonprofit public awareness advocacy organization. In Ohio 23 percent of children are left alone and responsible for taking care of themselves. With the start of the new school year, the Y encourages parents/caregivers to make sure that children are involved in safe, educational experiences after school.

“The combination of enrichment and extended learning opportunities is essential to increasing children’s success in school,” said Etta Hilfinger, Child Care Director, Tuscarawas County YMCA. “YMCA preschool and afterschool programs promote a love for learning, social and emotional development, healthy choices, character and creativity, and provide children with an extra support system through positive role models to help them achieve and reach their full potential.”

Studies show participation in afterschool programs helps boost school attendance and academic performance and reduces gaps in academic achievement among children.

In the Y’s afterschool program youth receive help with homework, a healthy snack and time for play. Financial assistance is available to those in need, to ensure every child and teen has the opportunity to learn and grow at the Y. The Y is also providing a Day Off program for holidays or snow days when both Dover and New Philadelphia schools are off. “Providing peace of mind for parents during the expected day off and the unexpected is our goal. Says Hilfinger. The Y is a family place and as family we are here to help.”

The Y’s preschool program offers children 3-5 years old a safe and fun environment where they can develop early academic skills, social skills and independence. Three day and five day programs are offered in both morning and afternoons. The 5 day PM program includes a swim lesson.

For more information about the Y’s afterschool program or Preschool program, please contact Etta Hilfinger at 330-364-5511 or visit www.tuscymca.org

OHIO YMCA’S YOUTH IN GOVERNMENT

Tuscarawas County YMCA youth leaders, Tyler Nathan, from Dover High School, and Taylor Young from New Philadelphia High School attended the 64th Ohio YMCA Youth in Government (YIG) State Assembly in Columbus. They were part of five hundred, Ohio high school students that got a direct view in terms of how democracy and state government work at the Ohio Statehouse from April 16 to 18. Students were immersed in all aspects of state government as they participated in mock House, Senate and Supreme Court hearings.

The students were selected to serve as senators, representatives, justices, lobbyists and press corps members. Some students also were selected to serve as governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, attorney general, president of the Senate, speaker of the House, and clerks and chaplains of the Ohio House and Ohio Senate.

The Ohio YMCA’s Youth in Government Program is a National YMCA Program that enhances development of the American democratic process for young people through participatory training in the theory and practice of the Ohio state government.

Teens in the program learn about the legislative process, how to write and research bills, and how to participate in elections. Their work culminates in teens serving as delegates at their state conference, debating bills on the floor of the legislature. Some teens have actually made bills into laws!

“The YIG program seeks to build, encourage and strengthen life assets and character traits that will help teens become involved and responsible adults,” says Steph Wills

YMCA Sr. Program Director. All YIG activities are designed with the following goals in mind: Providing leadership training and preparation to meet the needs of a democratic society. Stimulating interest and awareness of US and state government’s function.

Creating opportunities for civic engagement and awareness of prominent social issues. Developing self-confidence and self-expression while fostering tolerance and understanding of others’ point of view. Cultivating the application of moral and ethical valuing processes to public policy making.

DIABETES ALERT DAY

Working Together to Help One Million More Americans Know Their Risk for Type 2 Diabetes on American Diabetes Association Alert Day®

Tuesday, March 24, is American Diabetes Association Alert Day, and the Tuscarawas County YMCA wants residents of Tuscarawas County to know their risk for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes, as well as preventive steps they can take today to reduce the chances of developing the disease.

The Y knows that the best way to reduce new cases of type 2 diabetes is to prevent them and awareness is the first step to prevention. With only 10 percent of the 86 million Americans aware of their condition, Tuscarawas County YMCA understands that it will take everyone working together to increase this number. The Tuscarawas County Y is joining Ys across the country, and other national organizations committed to addressing the diabetes epidemic, in an effort to help one million more Americans learn their risk for type 2 diabetes.

In the United States alone, diabetes affects nearly 29 million people and another 86 million Americans have prediabetes, yet only about 9 million are aware of it. These statistics are alarming, and the impact on the cost of health care and overall well-being of our communities makes preventing the number of new cases of type 2 diabetes more important than ever before.

The nation’s struggle with obesity and type 2 diabetes is no surprise, but the number of people with prediabetes is a growing issue, especially when only 10 percent realize they have the condition. Prediabetes is an often preventable condition in which individuals have blood glucose levels that are higher than normal, but not high enough to be classified as diabetes. People with prediabetes can reduce their risk for developing type 2 diabetes by adopting behavior changes that include eating healthier, increasing physical activity, and losing a modest amount of weight. People with prediabetes are at risk for not only developing type 2 diabetes, but also heart disease, stroke and other conditions.

As a leading voice on improving the nation’s health and well-being, the Y and Tuscarawas County YMCA encourage all adults to learn their risk for type 2 diabetes by taking a risk test at www.ymca.net/diabetes. Several factors that could put a person at risk for type 2 diabetes include family history, age, weight, and activity level, among others.

Chances are each of us has a friend or family member with diabetes, but it’s even more likely that we know someone with prediabetes who doesn’t even know he or she is at risk,” said Brandi Hibbs, Healthy Living Director at the Tuscarawas County YMCA. “Diabetes Alert Day is the perfect time to not only determine our own risk, but to also encourage our family and friends to determine their chance of developing the disease. Studies show that people with prediabetes can prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes by making simple lifestyle changes that include eating healthier and increasing physical activity.”

The Tuscarawas County YMCA is helping people make healthier choices that can help reduce the risk of developing prediabetes or type 2 diabetes by offering Diabetes Prevention programs, Personal Training, and group exercise classes for all levels.

Some basic lifestyle changes that contribute to weight loss and an increased focus on healthy living, can decrease the risk for type 2 diabetes. Among these are:

Eat fruits and vegetables every day.

Choose fish, lean meats and poultry without skin.

Aim for whole grains with every meal.

Be moderately active at least 30 minutes per day five days a week.

Choose water to drink instead of beverages with added sugar.

Speak to your doctor about your diabetes risk factors, especially if you have a family history of the disease or are overweight.

YMCA OFFER DIABETES PROGRAM

Tuscarawas County YMCA offers Diabetes Prevention Program, a United Way Funded program. As a leading nonprofit for strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, the Y believes that all people should be able to live life to its fullest, healthiest potential. In the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program, a trained lifestyle coach will introduce topics in a supportive, small group environment, and encourage participants as they explore how healthy eating, physical activity, and behavior changes can benefit their health.

How it Works:

The 12-month group-based program consists of 7 one-hour, weekly sessions, followed by monthly sessions, led by a coach who facilitates a small group of people with similar goals.

Discuss topics such as healthy eating, increasing physical activity, reducing stress, problem solving, and much more.

Stay motivated to maintain progress towards program goals, with monthly maintenance sessions.

Program Goals:

Lose 7% of your body weight

Gradually increase your physical activity to 150 minutes per week.

You will do this by learning strategies for:

Healthy Eating—Eating smaller portions, reducing fat in your diet, and discovering healthier food options have been proven to help prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes1.

Increasing Physical Activity—Studies have repeatedly shown that moderate physical activity (walking, swimming, mowing the lawn) for as little as 30 minutes, five days a week, can help improve your blood pressure, raise your good cholesterol, and prevent blood flow problems2.

Losing Weight—It has been shown that reducing your body weight by even a small amount (as little as 7%) can offer tremendous benefits for people at risk for diabetes3.

If you have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, please have your physician fill out the Physician Referral Form which is found at the Y or on our website. Classes begin Wednesday, February 25 at 5:45 PM. If you have questions please contact Brandi Hibbs at brandi@tuscymca.org.

TUSCARAWAS COUNTY YMCA CELEBRATES 95 YEARS OF SERVICE

The Tuscarawas County YMCA will celebrate its 95th anniversary on December 29, 2014. What started as an idea of a few forward thinking volunteers, turned into an organization that has served and helped develop thousands of community youth and has been a valuable resource for families. Today, the Y continues its commitment and dedication to youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.

Three essential items are needed for a community organization to remain viable, significant, and relevant. They are community support, outstanding leadership, and quality services and programs. The Tuscarawas County YMCA has been blessed with all three over its entire 95 year history.

Community support has been extraordinary since its inception. The founding volunteers set the stage for acceptance by the community. This is best exemplified by the thousands of individuals who have been Y members and program participants. Each year over 12,000 people are active in Y programs, activities, and events, with a total attendance of over 600,000. Community support for facilities over the past 44 years has been outstanding since the construction of the original YMCA building on Tuscarawas Avenue in 1928, the building of the “new” YMCA on Monroe Street in 1971, and the many additions and expansions to the present facility. The Tuscarawas County community has donated over $6,000,000 for facility construction, upgrades, and improvements.

The Y has been blessed with outstanding leadership over these past 95 years as well. It is only through visionary and dedicated volunteers that the Y has been able to grow and meet the challenges of the changing community. Community leaders such as Andrew Deis, John Marsh Sr., Paul Redinger, John Marsh Jr., Walter Zimmerman, Brenton Kirk Jr., Robert Kappler, W. Richard Werner, Ann Marsh, Richard Hanhart, Brian Marsh, Craig Rader, and Mark Heil are just a few that have served in leadership roles. That outstanding leadership continues today with Jay Dummermuth, Chairman of the YMCA Board of Directors and Dan Hershberger, Chairman of the YMCA Board of Trustees. A total of 63 individuals have served as Board Chairmen of the YMCA since it was charted in 1919.

The Y has also been blessed with outstanding professional leadership during its history. A total of 13 people have served as Executive Director/CEO of our county Y. Three have made up the majority of that tenure. They include Miles Durr, Executive Director from 1944-1967; Tom Patton from 1967-1989 and again from 1994-1995; and Keith Lands, current Executive Director/CEO since 1995. They have combined to lead the organization for 66 of its 95 years.

Finally, the Y has been committed to providing quality programs, services, and activities for its entire existence. Without a commitment to excellence, the Y would not have survived to be such an outstanding provider of the needed programs and services for our community today. This has been made possible by having outstanding program directors and staff, and a tremendous corps of volunteer program leaders.

The Y has had over 20 program directors who have provided the necessary vision and commitment to program excellence. It addition, thousands of part-time staff have served as class instructors, lifeguards, coaches, supervisors, trainers, referees, counselors, desk attendants, maintenance, and custodial staff.

The involvement of Y volunteers since 1919 has made a significant impact on the quality of program offerings. Thousands of individuals have volunteered their services as class leaders, coaches, meet and game officials, concession stand workers, campaign volunteers, and board and committee members. Last year alone, over 300 people gave of their time and talents to help ensure the Y met its mission of service to our community.

It is that mission of service that has made the Y an organization that has lasted the test of time and has enabled the Y to reach its 95th anniversary celebration. A mission of character development for all people, regardless of their abilities or resources, has been the focus of the Y since its beginning in 1919. Ninety-five years of leadership, support, and quality programs have been based on the Christian belief that the development of the spirit, mind, and body can make a difference in people, our community, and the world. The Tuscarawas County YMCA celebrates its past 95 years of achievement and looks forward to the challenges and opportunities that will impact our community as we continue to move forward.

The Y will be celebrating its 95th anniversary on Monday, December 29 with anniversary cake, drawings for 95 special prizes, reducing of our joiner’s fee to $.95 for the day, and recognizing our 95 most continuous members.

Start Off ‘Small’ When Setting New Year’s Resolutions

The New Year is a time for new beginnings and to set goals that strengthen one’s spirit, mind and body. While it’s tempting to make big goals, it’s essential to start small. Set goals that are attainable, easy to sustain and lead to big benefits over time. As a community-serving organization here in Tuscarawas County, we see how things such as getting involved in with the community and making lifestyle changes can change someone’s life for the better. Here are five New Year’s Resolutions the Tuscarawas County YMCA recommends for 2014:

Eat Healthy: Make water your drink of choice (supplemented by age-appropriate portions of 100 percent fruit juices and low-fat milk) and eat more fruits and vegetables. Keep it interesting and create some variety by mixing and matching fresh, frozen and canned fruits and vegetables.

Commit to Community Service: Giving back and supporting neighbors can benefit everyone involved. Not only is it a personally rewarding experience to help others in need, but it’s also a way to meet new people or discover an interest. Find an opportunity in your community, such as cleaning the neighborhood park or distributing food at a local food bank.

Unplug from Technology: Limit screen time (television, video games, computer, etc.) and instead set aside an hour or two for activities. If weather permits, go for a walk, bike ride, trip to the park, or have a game night at home with family or friends.

Be Physically Active: It’s important for children to get at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day (30 minutes for adults). Incorporate physical activity into your daily routines and spend more time walking to places instead of driving to improve your health and well-being.

Put Extras to Good Use: Do you have extra canned goods or clothes that could benefit others in need? Clean out your pantry, closet or attic and donate extra items to homeless shelters or community outreach programs.
“At the Y, we are committed to strengthening communities and believe this begins with strengthening the people within the community,” said Brandi Hibbs, Healthy Living Director, Tuscarawas County YMCA. “Setting a goal to achieve any one of the Y’s recommended five New Year’s Resolutions can help improve one’s health and well-being.”

New Year’s Resolutions for High Risk Diabetes

We are just a week away from the annual tradition of making a New Year’s resolution. This year, when you make your resolution to lose weight, consider the Tuscarawas County Y’s Diabetes Prevention Program. This is a United Way funded program that runs for an entire year starting January 8 at 7:30 PM. The cost is $35 for non-members and gives you access to the Y. The first seven weeks the group meets to discuss diet, exercise, diabetes, and how it affects the body. Dieticians and Wellness Coaches will help you develop a plan to reach a healthy balance through diet and exercise. After the initial seven core sessions, you will meet monthly for added support to help maintain your progress. In order to qualify, you must be overweight, and at high risk of developing Type 2 diabetes or have been diagnosed with pre-diabetes or have type 2 diabetes. In addition, you must be willing and able to exercise a minimum of 150 minutes per week, maintain a food/exercise journal, and meet with a wellness coach for weekly workouts.

What are Diabetes and Pre-diabetes?

Diabetes is a disease in which blood glucose levels are above normal. Most of the food we eat is turned into glucose, or sugar, for our bodies to use for energy. The pancreas, an organ that lies near the stomach, makes a hormone called insulin to help glucose get into the cells of our bodies. When you have diabetes, your body either doesn’t make enough insulin or can’t use its own insulin as well as it should. This causes sugar to build up in your blood.

A person with pre-diabetes has a blood sugar level higher than normal, but not high enough for a diagnosis of diabetes. He or she is at higher risk for developing type 2 diabetes and other serious health problems, including heart disease and stroke.

The vast majority of people living with pre-diabetes, though, do not even know they have it.

Research shows that modest weight loss and regular physical activity can help prevent or delay type 2 diabetes in up to 58% in people with pre-diabetes.

Let the Y help you reach your wellness goals. Contact Brandi at brandi@tuscymca.org for more information.

Healthy Tusc announces Riggle as Advocate 23st of October 2013

CONTACT: Healthy Tusc Chairperson Kim Nathan,Union Hospital, Director or Work Well and First Care 330-602-0750

Healthy Tusc is happy to announce the recent hire of Gabriel Riggle as the Healthy Tusc Advocate for Tuscarawas County, courtesy of a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Gabriel was born and raised on a farm outside the village of Tuscarawas. He attended law school and is licensed to practice law in New York State. After a year of teaching English in Korea, Gabriel returned to the area as the Mud Run Watershed AmeriCorps Volunteer. As Advocate, he will work with policy makers and community leaders to continue Healthy Tusc’s work addressing the obesity epidemic in the community. Gabriel will help residents take personal responsibility for their health by making it safe for them to do so.

For the past 60 years, public infrastructure has focused almost exclusively on the automobile. This has resulted in communities that are often unpleasant or unsafe to travel around on foot, bicycle, or wheelchair. Loss of the ability to carry out day-to-day activities on foot have had an extremely negative effect on public health. Further, auto-exclusive design isolates populations that do not have access to motor vehicles. The “Complete Streets” concept was designed to return American communities to the vibrancy of the 20s, 30s, and 40s.

“Complete Streets” are those that are designed for all users: walkers, cyclists, young people, older Americans, the physically challenged, and automobiles. Common elements include frequent, safe crosswalks, tree-lined buffers along ubiquitous sidewalks, and well marked bike lanes. These elements, to paraphrase Mark Fenton, engineer physical activity back into everyday life.

As a means to sustain its efforts, Healthy Tusc aims to address Regulatory and Rule-making as the primary goal of its taskforce. Participation in the rule-making process can ensure action compliments the goals of the state level Pioneering Healthy Communities initiative, as well as within Healthy Tusc objectives; both of which align with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation priorities.

Gabriel will work with the community to establish infrastructure policies that meet the needs of all residents, regardless of age, ability, or mode of transportation. Be sure to “Like” Healthy Tusc on Facebook to hear about exciting outdoor activities, meetings on community needs, and progress on returning Tuscarawas County to a safe place for all residents. Information on “Complete Streets” is available at http://www.smartgrowthamerica.org/complete-streets. Gabriel may be reached at healthytusc@tuscymca.org, or at 330-364-5511,X312.

Y Announces New Head Gymnastics Coach

The Tuscarawas County YMCA is proud to announce the promotion of Adam Pierce to Head Gymnastic Coach. Pierce has been an assistant coach for the Y for the past seven years.

Pierce brings a lifetime of experience with him. He has been active in gymnastics since the age six and has competed at elementary, middle, and high school levels.

“He has a true passion for this sport.” Says Anne Riggs, Tuscarawas County YMCA Gymnastics Director. “He loves watching others succeed and when they stick that landing or when they are struggling to get a skill and they finally do… that’s what makes coaching for him so satisfying. He brings to the mat more than just gymnastics experience. He has the heart and spirit of a true competitor.”

Pierce has also competed in Allstar Cheerleader Competitions. “Gymnastics and Cheerleading are always a good mix” adds Riggs. “We look forward to great things to come from his leadership.”

Pierce leads a very active lifestyle. In his spare time he likes to roller skate, hike, workout, and tumble (of course that’s his favorite). “I is very excited to be the new Head Coach of the YMCA Gymnastics Team and I can’t wait to see what this season has in store for us.” Says Pierce. “Whatever it may be we will be ready.”

An Unbeatable Lineup to Keep You In The Game

The Tuscarawas County YMCA and the United Way are once again teaming up to help residents in Tuscarawas County defend themselves from weight gain that leads to diabetes and other chronic illnesses.

If you are overweight, feeling tired, tried other weight loss programs but cannot seem to make them stick, or you have barriers that you have not been able to overcome we have the perfect program for you. The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program provides such a plan to help those with pre-diabetes adopt and maintain healthy habits to improve their overall health and well-being while reducing their risk.

If you are overweight, have high cholesterol, inactive, or over the age of 45 you qualify for this is the program. The program is a year-long program with 7-one –hour classroom sessions, then monthly maintenance where you will have access to the Y and be matched with a personal trainer. The goal is for participants to lose 7 percent of their body weight and increase their physically activity to 150 minutes per week.

Classes begin Wednesday, September 11 at 6:30 PM. Stop by the Y to register. If you have further questions, please email brandi@tuscymca.org

All proceeds from the YMCA outing are used to provide financial assistance for youth and families who are unable to afford YMCA memberships and programs. In 2012 the YMCA provided $60,000 to 618 deserving area youth and family members in our community.
